Unfortunate 1h7min

So I have this weird theory about my running results and a general condition. I run quite regulary, not to mention my gym sessions. Doing everyhing to strengthenn my legs, eating healthy. But there’s one thing  I can’t stop thinking about: how is it possible that every time I participate in one of the running events, my results are worse than usually..? Seriously, yesterday I completed the Maniac Ten Run by the Malta Lake in my city. I was pretty confident and, as I thought, well prepared. And what? 1h7min. It’s always 1h7min when I run 10k. Is it because of the adrenaline, or the pressure? Or maybe because most of us start with the quicker pace to show off a bit and feel worse after 3k? Maybe it’s high time to try these famous intervals? Is it possible that the gym workouts don’t  help as much as I thought?

I have less than a month left for the next run, which will be Poznan Halfmarathon and to be honest, I’d really like to be able to run it with no stops. Soon, I’m goig to Barcelona for 10 days and I’ll have plenty  of time to run there, by the beach, just like I used to a year ago. In Barcelona (unlike here, in the city center), you simply cannot get bored of running the same route every day. Maybe, somehow I’ll find my inspiration and motivation again!

But, speaking of the Maniac Ten Run, like I said, I completed this 10k run yesterday, exploring the streets of Poznan with 4 000 other participants. I met one of my friends who had her running debut and completed it with an amazing result of 58min. The weather was rainy, but not windy at all. People were happy and full of energy. The audience we had, was pretty big, as there were lots of people in the streets cheering us on. The medal we got was one of the most beautiful so far. I just missed  my dad, who didn’t run this time  and stayed home with the fever. Maybe that was the reason why I couldn’t improve my final result – the ack of my running partner..?

Anyway, time to stop complaining now, 1h7min is not such a bad result, however I kind of consider it as my running curse. Time to break the bad spell and get ready for the 21k run, that will take place on 12th of April!

Enough is enough

The fifth week of my challenge has come to an end. And I am high on endorphins, constantly! I don’t sleep till 11 am anymore, wake up with a smile on my face. I’m definitely more busy and as a result, better organized. In general, life looks and tastes better now. At the beginning of the project, I wasn’t sure which results should I expect. Now it’s clear – not only slimmer and more muscular body, but a positive attitude most of the time. Everything seems easier and brighter, also because spring has finally arrived here! Sun is shining, the sky is cloudless, people smile and wear colorful clothes again!  This weekend I celebrated the end of the winter with my mom, doing only what we felt like doing: watching movies, shopping, eating and.. working out. Lazy Sunday wasn’t so lazy for us.. We went for a 3h stroll and walked 15 km in total.

So when I started working out with my friend Kasia, she brought us a plan: which parts should we take care of, when, how intensively and so on. She said, we shouldn’t do the same parts without a break. I didn’t take it too seriously, as we didn’t exercise too hard. So I kept on lifting weights, doing squats – anything to make my legs stronger and butt look better. So after this 3h walk I went to the gym today. And.. Came back after 30 minutes.. Kasia was right.. Enough is enough. I wasn’t able to do more than 5 abs!

So we got to this point when, from a lazy ass I became a person who wants to spend at the gym every minute of my spare time. However, it’s not too good either. I just learned that it’s important to keep the balance in everything you’re doing. Sometimes it’s good to rest a bit, let your muscles regenerate and start the next day with more power!

And that’s what I wish you for the following week – lot’s of energy!

Just Run!

This week’s motto? “Money doesn’t bring you happiness. Shopping does”. How amazing is that –  you get yourself some new running clothes and you immediately feel like running ultra marathons! I started doing some research, as I have to get myself new running shoes. The hole in the old ones is getting bigger and bigger. People say that you should change your shoes every 800 km. My shoes are only like 600km old but apparently they’ve decided to go retire a bit earlier. I’ve decied to stick to my favourite Nike. I know, I know – there are better shoes, I am aware of that. But as a woman, I not only want to have good quality shoes, but also nice ones, and these ones called me “mommy”. So I have no other choice, but looking for a sponsor!

The first months of my 6 months challenge is coming to an end. So far, so good, I’d say. I am not gonna hide any of my dirty secrets and come clean –  last 1,5 week was pretty tough, as I had my last exam, that happened to be the most difficult. But having passed everything, I am back on track and at the gym. Got some amazing news – last time when I was working out, my mother, with her voice full of surprise, said “Oh my God, look at your body, it’s changed a lot”. Well, like I said, changes are good.

What’s more, not only I want to keep running, I want to improve my results. That’s why I signed up for the Nigh Runners group. From the next week I’ll start training with them. The bad news is, that even the slowest group runs faster than me! We will all prepare for the Poznan Halfmarathon, that takes place in April, 12th. Also, I joined the Poznan University of Economics Running Club and will join with them various running events in our voivodeship. I still have 1,5 month for the Halfmarathon, however in 10 days I’ll run the Maniac Ten Run, which will be a good training and two weeks after the Halfmarathon I’ll complete my first run with PUE Running Club. Sounds exciting and sound like I’ll have to buy these new shoes very soon..

It might sound shallow, but I’ve decided topromote a bit this blog and as a result of this decision, I started the Run Eat Love facebook fan page – feel free to take a look. Keeping it up!

So, it’s been over two weeks since I’ve started my 6 months challenge. I must say I am really proud of myself. Keeping it up, not skipping any training. So far, I managed to work out a routine: 2 x running, 2 x gym, 2 x yoga. I also try to eat a little bit healthier, which is not the easiest thing to do, especially that I have to cook for myself. I can’t cook.. For the past two weeks I’ve been trying to find an hour to go shopping, as my fridge looks like every typical students’ fridge: wine, cheese and a carrot (thought I may start liking carrots, because they are healthy and give your skin this nice color, but well, the only possible way for me to eat a carrot is while dipping it in my favorite fatty hummus). However, when I decided to have something unhealthy in the downtown, my belly was hurting, which as far as I am concerned, means that I have already changed my diet for a better one. Unfortunately, it looks like my University professors are trying to make my die out of starvation – basically, for the past month, all the spare time I had, I’ve spent studying, so… no food for Olga!

I can see my body is changing. It’s not like I look like one of these girls from fitness channels on TV, but there is a tiny progress. And my legs feel stronger, so last time I went for a run, I must say, it was a pure pleasure. So, I’ve completed two weeks out of 26, still 24 to go.

About the St. Valentine’s Day.. Most hated day in the world – as always, I celebrated in an unusual way – running. As I mentioned in a previous post, we completed the St. Valentine’s 10k Run with my Dad, having my mommy as the audience. So far, it’s been one of the toughest runs I’ve ever completed. Almost 900 people (mostly couples, which was really cute), running in the forest. The ground wasn’t frozen anymore and it was 5 degrees, so you can only imagine the amount of mud we were sinking in. I reached the finish line, with my face red like a beetroot, with the result of 1:12 – the worst one over the past 1.5 year, but.. We did it, that’s the most important. The medals we got, compensated all the inconveniences.

I guess I can consider the week 2 as a successful one! I hope, guys that it wasn’t only for me. Wish you an amazing week 3!

Fit is the new black!

So it’s officially started – my 6 months challenge. I am quite proud of myself due to sticking to my plan for the first week. I know it’s nothing really special, just 7 days, but trust me – for such a lazy ass it’s really something.

As I planned, I did 4 workouts this week, I will probably do the fifth one today. One run, 2 x gym and I started practicing yoga. Yoga that used to make me laugh, especially when I saw all these people trying not to think about anything, almost as if they were trying to make themselves levitate. That was couple of years ago. Now, something’s changed. Being such a quick-tempered person like me, you get angry or emotional very quickly. So instead of wasting energy on arguing and shouting, I’ve decided to stretch a bit and maybe try this “clear your mind, do not think about anything” thing. And surprisingly I liked it!! And that’s how the yoga mat became my friend.

Like I wrote in a previous post, the more you exercise, the more endorphins you need, which makes you want to exercise even more. I can feel it after a week. Truly amazing!   I also made sure, I will have some healthy food in my fridge, mainly vegetables, chicken and grains To motivate myself even more, every day of the first week I was posting a pic from each workout on Instagram. It may sound silly or shallow, but I don’t really care – I am really excited about this plan – fit is the new black!

It’s not only about posting pics of my body changing, it is also about the results: that’s why exactly in a week time – instead of going to the cinema with a guy, I’ll go for a run.. with my dad (YES, I know, it’s kinda sad!). St. Valentine’s 10k Run, where I’ll see if riding a bike and stretching helped to strengthen my muscles and gave me a better results

Another news is that I planned to participate in Wings for Life Run in Poznań on 3rd of May. The problem is that I also signed up for the race to Budapest that will be held in exactly the same time, so.. I don’t want to risk I won’t make it back to Poznań on time. That’s why I decided to sing up for the same run but in… Austria! I really wanted to join my father in Porto, as he’s taking my mom on holidays to Portugal, but I guess it will be too time consuming. So – Austria. Sounds awesome!

No ifs, no buts!

I can’t say I am a hard-working person. As much as I’d like to, I can’t. I like to sleep and eat too much, I like to travel and I am freaking out when my account balance is not as high as it used to be. I am not a hard-working person and I get bored very quickly. If I workout regulary it’s all fine, because I need more endorphinns. But the moment I stop for more than two days, there is no way I’ll get back on track soon. I also realized that, the more you train and challenge yourself, the easier your life gets and the more positive attitude you have. I heard that when in Germany a depressed peron goes to see a shrink, the first thing he or she gets is running shoes and trousers.

As we have just started another year, I decided to find my purpose in life. Do something that would motivate me, help me to succeed and maybe somehow inspire others. If there is even one person who’d follow my steps – it’s always worth trying. That’s why I spoke with a person who is into running and another one who is into gym. Thanks to their help I created a basic training plan, that will prepare my for the marathon and make me fit.

I know that you can find hundreds of fitness motivation blogs or Instagram profiles. I know that there is a lot of criticism and it’s not easy to make people follow and convince them that what you are doing is right, but I will do it for myself. It will be my personal challenge. As the marathon will take place in October, 15th I have 9 months to get ready. I’ve decided to create a 6 months plan including 2 runs a week, 1-2 workouts at the gym and changing a bit my eating habbits (resigning from white bread or pasta). After completing  6 months challenge, I will still have 3 months to run and hopefully I’ll be strong and fit enough, to run 42k without stops. To start with I give myself 3 months to remind myself how to actually run and strenghten my body a bit before implementing my 25 weeks Marathon Training Plan.

I also decided to let other people control me in a way, by posting pictures and showing the progress on Insagram. As I went public with this plan, there is no way back for me I guess. I already did my first official workout today: indoor cycling, 1h, 18km.

B for Big news

Ok, the time has come. It might sound extremely selfishly, but 2015 belongs to me. Having forgotten all the bad things that happened in 2014, it’s time for the fresh start. I have already started implementing some of the NY resolutions – I have traveled to Berlin and Barcelona within a week – the best way to start 2015! Having said that, another crazy news: 2015 will be not only a self development year for me.. One of my friends sent me a message with a Marathon training plan: marathon for beginners – 25 weeks, 2 runs a week. If a beginner can prepare within half year, running only twice a week, it is a sign that impossible is nothing. I have no choice to be honest – my father signed up for the triathlon in May, I can’t be worse, right..

Another news is that I have just realized how much I miss my southern home – Barcelona, so if only I pass all the exams (starting with the trade law today), I’ll get on a plane and travel to Catalunia to complete Barcelona Mitja Marato on 15th of February – thank you Ryanair for surprisingly cheap flight tickets! March will be a month of the Maniac Ten Run, while in April my dad and I will run the Poznań Halfmarathon. 3rd of May will be very important because of International Wings for Life Run. I guess this is a run every runner should join at some point!

My calendar is getting filled with more and more events. And as I decided to travel more and experience more, on Saturday I will pack my luggage and get on a plane again. This time my destination will be Africa, Seychelles to be precise. 29 degrees in the middle of winter, diving with those gigantic turtles, eating fresh fruits for breakfast and.. running along the beach. Running along the beach in Seychelles.. I am getting excited just by the thought of it!

The whole training plan starts tomorrow. Like I said, 2015 is a year of self development – I will do my best to stick to the plan I wrote down and hope to achieve all the goals I mentioned above.

“More” is the word

2014 is coming to an end. To sum up: I wouldn’t categorize it as the best or the worst. However,was one of the most difficult years so far. One one side-moving back to Poland in not the best atmosphere, having some problems with adapting, starting my master’s degree after two years break. One the other hand – realizing how wonderful family and friends I have, meeting new people, investing in my education. My dad always says, that our life is a sinusoid – sometimes, to bounce back, we have to hit the rock bottom first. I am pretty sure 2015 will be amazing then.

I must admit that in this whole chain of events, running has played a big role. I met many people who run because of different reasons, I am one of those who use it as a, maybe not therapy, but a tool that helps to deal with stress and anger (not that I  have problems with aggression or something). There is nothing better to calm you down when you are just about to explode. Next year I want to do more, achieve more, run more – hoping in the same time that my motivation will not be caused by too much stress or anger.

Travel more, laugh more, love more, experience more, learn and study more, eat more healthy, think more, take more risk, take more care of your body, meet more amazing people, do more things that you love, say “yes” more than “no”, have no regrets, worry less. Simpy – be happy most of the time!

Heading south..

OK, I made my decision: living in the most beautiful house with the best parents a person can have has come to an end. I moved out. Every year, when winter comes, storks leave their nests and head south, I would’t be surprised if they headed Barcelona, to be honest. I used to be a stork for two years, this is my first winter here since 2012. However, my old birdy habits remained and I had to leave. I used to live in the northern part of the city, so heading south in my case means heading exactly the city center. The middle of everything. I live 5 min away from the old market on a lovely street full of dogs poo and bald guys with tattoos on their calf, wearing baggy gray trousers.. We already smile when we see each other, because in my theory it is better to have good relations with people like them. I keep telling myself that they wouldn’t kill their person. You never know thou, so I smile every time I see one of them, saying “Our Father” in my mind.

This is a great location for runners too as it is by the river. As I haven’t run for more than a week, I feel like all my muscles disappear, so as soon as I handle all the issues with gas and electricity, I will go for a good run (by the river, under the bridge, where all of my friends and I used to drink Russian champagnes.. Nothing to be proud of, really). I am also pretty sure that there is a big possibility I will meet at least one exhibitionist flashing people from the bushes.

Anyway.. I started a new chapter in my life: I am a proper adult now. For example I have to buy myself a horribly expensive food. But I am not giving up, I decided to save some money. If it  means stealing sugar from the cafes.. well.. Being filled with positive energy I signed up for another runs: spontaneously I will participate in New Year’s Run on 28th of Dec, Maniac Ten (km) in March and Poznań Halfmarathon on 12th of April. And like every Polish stork that has a need to head south from time to time, I am also thinking about going to Barcelona in February to complete Barcelona Mijta Marato again, just like a year ago. If someone has too much money and wants to buy me flight tickets, feel free to ask me for my bank account details!

Ho, ho.. holy crap!

I cannot move.. I really can’t! Every inch and muscle of my body hurts, I didn’t even know they still existed! And everything thanks to… all-night’s volleyball tournament that took place on Friday, a day before my Santa Claus 10k Run. The last time I played volleyball was about 3-4 years ago before the spine injury I had and it was quite a challenge to play with guys who are a members of the third league. It was fun thou. The problem was that 5h after the tournament was over, I was supposed to wake up and run, dressed up like a Santa.

Been there, done that! And again, together with my dad and my dad’s friends we completed the 10k run and got beautiful medals. It is already December, but the weather was surprisingly nice – no wind, cloudy sky, 5 degrees. The money we spent to sign up for the run, were donated to one of the orphanages and if I am not mistaken, a group of the kids from this orphanage were there with us, cheering us. It must have been funny, seeing a group of 1500 people running in a line, in the forest, wearing the Santa Claus’ hat and a fake beard.

I knew it wasn’t the end for me, I had a plan to run another 10k the next day, dressed up the same way, just by the different lake. I couldn’t say veni, vidi, vici this time. I could’t get out of bed either! I woke up an hour ago, and like yesterday I was able to move, today it’s a little worse.. I mean.. I am trying not to cough, sneeze or laugh too much. If I do, I can immediately feel my belly muscles and I start making weird noises. Getting out of bed wasn’t the easiest one either, while trying to sit down I probably sounded like a mother-whale calling her children.. I guess it’s better! I still donated some money to the charity by signing up for this run and thanks to this, abandoned or sick kids will get Christmas presents! I also learned my lesson: the more is not always the better. And maybe try not to mix running with volleyball after 4 years break 🙂
